Eliina Hurtig
Eliina Hurtig (1978) is a visual artist from Rovaniemi. She graduated with a Master of art from the University of Lapland in 2009, majoring in arts education. Hurtig paints expressive acrylic and oil paintings. Since 2004, she has held solo exhibitions in different parts of Finland and participated in several curated group exhibitions. She belongs to the Lapland artists’ association and the Finnish painters’ association. Hurtig’s works have been acquired in the city collections of the Rovaniemi Art Museum and in the collection of the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Fund. The Art Promotion Center and the Finnish Cultural Fund have supported Hurtig’s art making.
As a visual artist, she feels that there is space and peace in the north to focus on making art. The presence of nature calms the mind and the vastness of the landscape gives space for thoughts to flow. The cycle of the year brings variation to the amount of light and the nature of the light. In the summer, the nightless nights allow working in natural light even at night, while in the winter daylight is barely visible and twilight takes away the brightest edge from the colors. As a painter, she is fascinated by the possibilities of color in expression and their effect on the viewer.
